Waxhaw, North Carolina

The quaint and historic Town of Waxhaw North Carolina offers a great place to raise a family.  Waxhaw NC homes and neighborhoods feature beautiful parks, excellent schools, unique shops, accent on the arts, extensive sports programs, and community activities.

Located in Union County about 30 miles south of Uptown Charlotte NC real estate, this rapidly growing town is home to about 15,300.  To accommodate the population burst  moving to Waxhaw it has encouraged the development of a wide variety of residential options to suit people of all incomes and ages.

For example, the pedestrian-friendly development Cureton, with its commercial core, offers single-family homes and townhomes.  Older Waxhaw NC homes in the downtown historic district also provide convenience and small-town camaraderie for residents.  Buyers who would like Waxhaw horse properties and farms may look in the area just south of town.

The Waxhaw Indians inhabited the area long before European immigrants.  During the 1700s, many Scot-Irish and German immigrants arrived via the great wagon road.  When in 1888 the railroad route to Atlanta brought prosperity, the local cotton industries took off.  The town chartered in 1889 and remained the center of cotton farming until the 1960s.

At that time, with the increasing outsourcing of textile making to other nations, Waxhaw took the initiative to remake itself into a charming tourist destination.  The Waxhaw Historic District is on the National Register of Historic Places.  Many historic buildings now house antique shops, specialty shops, and fine and casual restaurants.

Cane Creek Park, south of town, is another community hub.  Sprawling over 1000 acres of beautiful natural landscape, Cane Creek Park hosts activities and visitors.  Community events include Scottish games, the arts and crafts festival, the Fourth of July and Christmas parades, antique shows, and the traditional Civil War reenactment.

The inland community boasts the rolling hills of the Piedmont.  It has mild winters and hot humid summers and plenty of precipitation throughout the year, including some winter storms.  It is centrally located approximately 23 miles from the Charlotte-Douglas International Airport, an easy commute to the metropolitan area.
