History

The town was founded in 1844 and has cotton and railroad industry history. The downtown area has a square with a courthouse in the center. This red-brick courthouse is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and acts as the centerpiece of the downtown area. Another highlight of the town is the real estate in the South Monroe historic District. The Layout of the Town

Most businesses, restaurants and shopping are located along Roosevelt Boulevard, or Highway 74. You’ll find the mall and many other big retailers along Roosevelt Boulevard. In the summer there are movies and music downtown. In June there is a Homes and Garden Tour which features some of of the town’s fabulous, historic residences. See the excitement and sparkle in the children’s eye during the annual Christmas parade.

If you enjoy the outdoors and hiking, be sure to visit places such as Morrow Mountain State Park or Andrew Jackson State Park. The area features popular wine tasting and vineyard tours as well. These tours are great for a wonderful weekend away. The beaches are just a few hours away.
