History
The town was founded in 1844 and has cotton and railroad industry history. The downtown area has a square with a courthouse in the center. This red-brick courthouse is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and acts as the centerpiece of the downtown area. Another highlight of the town is the real estate in the South Monroe historic District. This area features every type of housing, from spectacular mansions to smaller, more modest multi-family and single-family homes.
The Layout of the Town
Most businesses, restaurants and shopping are located along Roosevelt Boulevard, or Highway 74. You’ll find the mall and many other big retailers along Roosevelt Boulevard. The city has an award-winning healthcare system and hospital in town. Charlotte Douglas International airport is less than an hour drive away.

Downtown Events
If you’re looking for something fun to do right in town or wish to take a drive, you’ll be sure to find a lot of excitement in the area. The downtown area has a lot to do throughout the year. Enjoy the market every Thursday in July through September. The Downtown Cruise-In features classic and hot-rod cars on Main Street on the first Friday of each month. In the summer there are movies and music downtown. In June there is a Homes and Garden Tour which features some of of the town’s fabulous, historic residences. See the excitement and sparkle in the children’s eye during the annual Christmas parade.
Area Activities
If you enjoy the outdoors and hiking, be sure to visit places such as Morrow Mountain State Park or Andrew Jackson State Park. The area features popular wine tasting and vineyard tours as well. These tours are great for a wonderful weekend away. The beaches are just a few hours away. Enjoy a staycation at one of North Carolina’s breathtaking beaches such as Emerald Isle, Bald Head Island, Cape Hatteras or Corolla/Currituck Beach.
Monroe is also known for a number of very popular flea and antique markets, such as the Sweet Union Flea Market and Ian Henderson’s Antique Market.
